Reliable Process Cooling for Water Treatment Facility with ECOMFORT R32

Project Overview

At a water treatment facility in France, Redge implemented a robust and high-performance process cooling solution using two ECOMFORT MC R32 indoor heat pumps. The goal was to deliver continuous, stable chilled water for critical areas---especially transformer and control zones---while meeting strict environmental and reliability standards.

The system was designed to maintain thermal stability and protect sensitive electrical equipment from overheating or shutdowns under fluctuating process conditions.

Challenges

Cooling systems in water treatment applications must operate reliably around the clock. Even brief thermal disruptions can damage transformer components, affect control logic, or interrupt automation processes. The client required:

  • High-performance heat pumps with proven seasonal efficiency

  • Equipment certified for continuous industrial use

  • A low-GWP refrigerant to align with decarbonization targets

  • Built-in redundancy through a secondary backup configuration

In addition, the system needed rapid restart capability, stable partial-load performance, and comprehensive protection features to maintain uninterrupted operations.

Redge Solution

Redge installed two ECOMFORT MC R32 indoor air-to-water heat pumps. These units were chosen for their compact format, energy efficiency, and smart hydronic integration, making them well-suited to technical utility environments.

Each unit includes:

  • Scroll compressors with inverter control for responsive, efficient cooling

  • EC fans for low-noise operation and airflow precision

  • Factory-integrated hydraulic modules for fast, simplified installation

  • R32 refrigerant with lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than legacy alternatives

To reinforce system reliability, two additional GEG R32 heat pumps were installed in standby mode. This ensures operational continuity in case of a service interruption or primary unit fault.

The system architecture supports automated switchover and remote monitoring, aligning with industrial resilience standards.

Key Outcomes

The installed cooling solution delivers:

  • Continuous chilled water production for temperature-sensitive infrastructure

  • Resilient 24/7 operation with backup heat pumps in place

  • Compliance with environmental standards through use of R32 refrigerant

  • Improved seasonal energy efficiency and reduced long-term risk

The result is a robust system that supports both operational uptime and sustainability goals for water utility environments.
