Smart Rooftop Retrofit for a Retail Store in the Province of Varese

Project Information

Location: Province of Varese, Italy

Sector: Retail – Large-Scale Food Retail

Application: Heating, cooling and ventilation for a retail store

Solution: Replacement of two 2009 Lennox rooftop units with two Redge EVIO R32 rooftop units

Project Overview

The project involved the refurbishment of the HVAC installation serving a retail store in the province of Varese, Italy. As a large-format retail environment, the store depends on reliable heating, cooling and ventilation to maintain comfortable conditions for customers and employees throughout extended trading hours.

The existing installation consisted of two Lennox rooftop units, originally installed in 2009 and equipped with gas burners. After more than 17 years of operation, the HVAC system required renewal. A key challenge was upgrading the ageing equipment without carrying out extensive alterations to the existing building infrastructure, allowing the store to remain operational throughout the works.

For retail facilities, HVAC replacement projects often involve balancing technical performance with installation practicality. Replacing rooftop units can require significant modifications to ductwork and structural interfaces, increasing both project costs and installation time. The objective was therefore to modernise the HVAC system while making the best possible use of the existing installation.

Redge Solution

The project replaced the two existing rooftop units with two Redge EVIO R32 rooftop units. Alongside the equipment replacement, a bespoke engineering solution enabled the new units to integrate with the original HVAC infrastructure.

1. Redge EVIO R32 Rooftop Units

Two Redge EVIO R32 rooftop units were installed to provide heating, cooling and ventilation for the retail store.

Each unit incorporates:

  • Heating and cooling capacity of 180 kW
  • Airflow of 27,000 m³/h
  • Enthalpy wheel heat recovery
  • Electric post-heating coil
  • Eurovent Energy Class A
  • G4 + F7 air filtration

Together, the two rooftop units provide integrated climate control and ventilation while replacing the original gas-fired equipment.

2. Bespoke Retrofit Integration

An important element of the project was the development of a custom adaptation frame designed by the technical department specifically for this installation.

The adaptation frame enabled the new EVIO rooftop units to be connected to the existing HVAC system, despite the original installation dating back more than 17 years. This engineering approach allowed the existing ductwork to be retained, avoiding extensive modifications to the building's air distribution system.

By preserving the existing duct network, the project reduced intervention time and installation costs while limiting disruption to the day-to-day operation of the retail store.

Results

  • Two ageing 2009 gas-fired rooftop units replaced with two Redge EVIO R32 rooftop units.
  • Existing ductwork retained through a bespoke adaptation frame.
  • Installation time reduced by avoiding major modifications to the HVAC distribution system.
  • Project costs reduced through the reuse of the existing ductwork.
  • Minimal impact on the retail store's day-to-day operations during the retrofit.
  • Heating, cooling and ventilation modernised within the existing building infrastructure.

Planning a Rooftop Retrofit?

Many retail buildings across Europe are operating with rooftop HVAC systems that are approaching the end of their service life. A carefully engineered retrofit can modernise the installation while retaining compatible elements of the existing infrastructure, helping to reduce project complexity and minimise operational disruption.

Whether you are replacing ageing rooftop units or planning an HVAC refurbishment for a retail facility, Redge can support retrofit projects with solutions designed to meet both technical and operational requirements.
